Conception

Conception is fertilisation of an egg by a sperm, forming a single cell that begins dividing as it travels along the fallopian tube. Conception is not the same as pregnancy: implantation into the lining of the uterus must follow, several days later, before a pregnancy can be detected. Many fertilised eggs never implant, which is a normal part of human reproduction rather than a sign that something has gone wrong.
