The hypothalamus releases GnRH in pulses, telling the pituitary when to release FSH and LH. Significant weight loss, very heavy exercise, stress or illness can suppress these pulses, causing hypothalamic amenorrhoea — periods stop and ovulation ceases, usually reversibly.
