Hypothalamic amenorrhoea

Periods stopping because the brain's hormone signals are suppressed.

Cycle and ovulation

Hypothalamic amenorrhoea occurs when low energy availability — from under-eating, heavy training, rapid weight loss or significant stress — suppresses the GnRH pulses that drive the cycle. It is usually reversible with increased nutrition, reduced training load and support, and this is generally addressed before fertility medicines are considered.

Also known as: HA, functional hypothalamic amenorrhoea, FHA
