Amenorrhoea is the absence of periods: primary if periods never started by around age 15, secondary if established periods stop for three months or more. Causes include pregnancy, PCOS, hypothalamic amenorrhoea from low energy availability, high prolactin, thyroid disease and primary ovarian insufficiency. It always warrants assessment.
