Prolactin supports breastfeeding, but a raised level outside pregnancy can suppress ovulation and cause irregular or absent periods, and sometimes nipple discharge. Causes include stress, some medicines, an underactive thyroid and a benign pituitary adenoma. It is checked with a blood test and is usually treatable.
