Perimenopause

The transition years before periods stop.

Cycle and ovulation

Perimenopause usually begins in the forties and brings shifting cycle length, hot flushes, sleep disturbance and mood change as hormone levels fluctuate. Fertility is much reduced but not zero, so contraception is still needed if pregnancy is not wanted, and AMH results in this phase should be interpreted with care.

Also known as: menopause transition
