Reproductive ageing

The gradual decline in egg and sperm quality and quantity over time.

Fertility basics

Reproductive ageing describes the biological changes that reduce fertility with time: falling numbers of eggs in the ovary, a rising proportion of eggs with chromosomal errors, and slower, smaller changes in sperm. It happens at different rates in different people, which is why two people of the same age can have very different AMH results or IVF outcomes. No test measures it precisely, and no treatment reverses it.

Also known as: ovarian ageing, fertility decline with age, reproductive aging
