Polycystic ovarian morphology means the ovaries contain many small follicles or have an increased volume on ultrasound. It is one of the three diagnostic criteria for PCOS but is not a diagnosis by itself — plenty of people with this appearance ovulate regularly and have no symptoms. Ultrasound criteria are also not used to diagnose PCOS within about eight years of the first period.
