Fertility basics
Primary amenorrhoea means periods have never started; secondary amenorrhoea means they have stopped for three months or more. Causes include pregnancy, low energy availability, high prolactin, thyroid disease, polycystic ovary syndrome and ovarian insufficiency. Absent periods always warrant assessment rather than waiting, because the cause guides treatment.
