Fertility basics
Under rising oestrogen, cervical mucus becomes clear, slippery and stretchy, helping sperm travel through the cervix. After ovulation, progesterone makes it thick and hostile again. Watching mucus changes is a low-cost way of identifying the fertile window, though it is less precise than ovulation testing.
