Ovulation follows a surge of luteinising hormone (LH) and is what turns the emptied follicle into a corpus luteum that produces progesterone. It typically occurs about 14 days before the next period, not necessarily on day 14. Regular, predictable periods usually mean ovulation is happening; confirmation can be made with a mid-luteal progesterone blood test.
