The hypothalamus releases GnRH in pulses, the pituitary responds with FSH and LH, and the ovaries respond with oestradiol and progesterone that feed back to the brain. Disruption anywhere along the axis — from weight loss, excessive exercise, illness or medication — can stop ovulation.
