Perimenopause

The years of hormonal change leading up to the last period.

Fertility basics

During perimenopause cycles become irregular, hormone levels fluctuate and fertility declines steeply, though pregnancy is still possible until periods have stopped for a year. Symptoms such as hot flushes and sleep disturbance are common. Fluctuating hormone tests in this phase are hard to interpret, and one FSH result should not be used alone.
