A biochemical pregnancy is a very early pregnancy loss that is confirmed only by blood tests: beta-hCG rises after embryo transfer or conception but then falls again before a gestational sac becomes visible on ultrasound. It is common, occurring in a proportion of pregnancies conceived both naturally and through IVF, and does not necessarily mean a lower chance of future success. It is different from a clinical pregnancy, where a sac has been seen on scan before any loss occurs. A biochemical pregnancy can be an emotionally significant loss even though it is very early and no scan was involved, and support is available if you need it.
