Miscarriage

The loss of a pregnancy before it can survive independently, usually before twenty weeks.

Pregnancy loss

Miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy, most commonly in the first trimester, before the pregnancy reaches a stage where it could survive independently. It is common, affecting a substantial proportion of confirmed pregnancies, whether conceived naturally or through fertility treatment, and in most cases the cause is a one-off chromosomal difference in the embryo rather than anything either partner did or did not do. Miscarriage can happen at different stages and present in different ways, including threatened miscarriage, missed miscarriage and anembryonic pregnancy, and it may be managed by watchful waiting, medication or a minor procedure depending on your situation and preference. This is a loss, not a failure, and support — practical, medical and emotional — is available; your clinic or gynaecologist can guide you on next steps and when it may be reasonable to try again.

Also known as: pregnancy loss, early pregnancy loss, spontaneous abortion
