Recurrent pregnancy loss refers to the loss of two or more confirmed pregnancies, and it prompts most Indian fertility specialists to offer a structured evaluation to look for possible contributing factors, which can include uterine structural conditions, certain hormonal or thyroid conditions, chromosomal factors in either partner (assessed by karyotype), and antiphospholipid syndrome. In many cases, despite thorough evaluation, no clear single cause is identified, which can be frustrating but does not mean that a future pregnancy cannot succeed. Investigation and management should be individualised in discussion with a gynaecologist or fertility specialist, since not every test is appropriate for every couple, and treatments should be guided by what is actually found rather than applied routinely. Genetic counselling may be recommended if a chromosomal cause is identified in either partner. This experience can be emotionally exhausting as well as physically difficult, and counselling support is available alongside the medical evaluation.
Also known as: RPL, recurrent miscarriage, habitual abortion
