Cabergoline is a medicine used to lower raised prolactin levels (hyperprolactinaemia), which can interfere with ovulation and menstrual regularity. It works by mimicking dopamine, which naturally suppresses prolactin release from the pituitary gland. It is sometimes used before or alongside fertility treatment when high prolactin is identified as a contributing factor. Cabergoline is also used, in some IVF settings, as one option to reduce the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) in women at higher risk after ovarian stimulation, as decided by the treating clinic. Any decision to start, adjust or stop cabergoline should be made by the prescribing doctor, based on prolactin levels, pituitary imaging where indicated, and the overall treatment plan. Cabergoline is a prescription-only medicine in India, regulated by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO).
