Cardiac activity refers to the visible pulsation of the developing heart on ultrasound, typically detectable from about six weeks of gestation once the embryonic pole reaches a certain length. Seeing cardiac activity at this stage is a positive sign, but it is not a guarantee that the pregnancy will continue, particularly in the first trimester. If cardiac activity is not seen at the expected stage, clinics usually offer a repeat scan a week or so later rather than making an immediate diagnosis, because dating can be uncertain even after IVF.
