Dermoid cyst

A dermoid cyst is a type of benign ovarian tumour that develops from cells present from birth and can contain mature tissue such as hair, skin, teeth or fat. It grows slowly and is usually found incidentally on a pelvic or transvaginal ultrasound done for another reason. Unlike functional cysts, dermoid cysts do not resolve on their own and are usually removed surgically, typically by laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy, particularly if large or causing symptoms, to reduce the risk of twisting (torsion) and to preserve as much healthy ovarian tissue as possible.
