DHEAS is a hormone produced mainly by the adrenal glands and converted in the body to other androgens. It is checked as part of the work-up for hyperandrogenism, such as in some presentations of PCOS or when there are signs of excess male-pattern hormone effects (like acne, excess hair growth or scalp hair thinning), to help distinguish an ovarian from an adrenal source of androgen excess.
