Hyperandrogenism refers to excess androgen (male-type hormone) levels or effects in women, shown clinically as acne, excess facial or body hair growth, or scalp hair thinning, and on blood tests as raised testosterone or DHEAS. It is a core feature of PCOS but can occasionally have other causes, which may be investigated further if the presentation is unusual or severe. Hyperandrogenism is assessed alongside ovulation pattern and ultrasound findings when diagnosing PCOS.
