A donor embryo is an embryo made available for another person's or couple's treatment, either because it was created specifically from donor eggs and donor sperm, or because a couple who completed their own family donated embryos remaining from their treatment. Embryo donation in India takes place through ART banks and clinics registered under the ART (Regulation) Act, 2021, with consent from the originating party/parties and screening consistent with donor gamete requirements. Using a donor embryo means the resulting child is not genetically related to either intended parent; clinics generally recommend counselling to discuss the implications before proceeding, and future disclosure to any child is a personal decision supported by counselling resources.
