Donor insemination is intrauterine insemination performed using donor sperm obtained through a registered ART bank, rather than a partner's sperm. It may be considered where the male partner has azoospermia or another severe male-factor issue, where there is no male partner, or for other medically or legally recognised reasons. In India, gamete donation is regulated under the ART (Regulation) Act, 2021 and its Rules, which set requirements for donor screening, anonymity, registration of ART banks, and limits on how donor gametes may be used and recorded. Sex selection is prohibited under the PCPNDT Act and does not apply to donor selection. Couples considering donor insemination are usually offered counselling to discuss the medical, legal and personal aspects of the decision, in line with current India regulation and the treating clinic's protocols.
