Endometrial hyperplasia

Thickening of the uterine lining due to excess growth of endometrial cells, sometimes needing treatment before pregnancy attempts.

Female fertility

Endometrial hyperplasia is a thickening of the uterine lining caused by excess growth of endometrial cells, often related to prolonged exposure to oestrogen without enough opposing progesterone, as can happen with irregular or absent ovulation. It is diagnosed with ultrasound and confirmed by endometrial biopsy. Some forms of endometrial hyperplasia carry a risk of progressing towards cancer if untreated, so a gynaecologist assesses the type on biopsy to guide treatment, which may include hormonal treatment or, rarely, surgery, chosen with fertility goals in mind where relevant.

Also known as: thickened endometrium, endometrial lining thickening
