Folic acid (also called folate in its natural dietary form) is a B-vitamin recommended for people planning pregnancy because adequate intake before conception and in early pregnancy reduces the risk of neural tube defects in the baby. It is one of the most established preconception supplements and is recommended widely by Indian and international health authorities. The right dose and timing depend on individual risk factors, such as a personal or family history of neural tube defects or certain medical conditions, so ask your doctor what is appropriate for you rather than self-selecting a dose. Folic acid supplementation does not replace a generally balanced diet and other preconception care.
Also known as: folate, vitamin B9
