HLA matching and PGT-HLA

Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) matching is a laboratory technique used to assess tissue-type compatibility, most relevantly to identify whether a newborn's umbilical cord blood or bone marrow could be a match for an existing sibling with a serious blood or immune condition requiring a stem cell transplant. PGT-HLA combines this tissue-typing with embryo testing during IVF, sometimes alongside PGT-M for a specific inherited condition, to identify an embryo that is both unaffected by the family's genetic condition and a tissue match for an affected sibling. This is an advanced and tightly limited application of PGT, relevant only to a very small number of families facing a serious existing childhood illness, and it raises complex medical, ethical and legal questions that go well beyond routine fertility treatment.
