Insulin resistance means the body's cells respond less effectively to insulin, so the pancreas produces more of it to keep blood sugar normal. It is common in PCOS and contributes to irregular ovulation and hyperandrogenism through its effects on ovarian hormone production. Insulin resistance is assessed through fasting glucose and insulin, or an oral glucose tolerance test, and is managed with lifestyle measures and, where appropriate, medicines prescribed by a physician; it is also relevant to preconception counselling because of its link with gestational diabetes.
