The post-wash sperm count (also called post-wash total motile sperm count) is the number of actively motile sperm recovered after a semen sample has been processed in the laboratory. It is considered a more useful figure than the raw semen analysis result when deciding whether IUI is appropriate, because it reflects what will actually be placed into the uterus. Laboratories report this alongside post-wash motility. Very low post-wash counts generally reduce the chance of success with IUI, and the fertility team may recommend IVF or ICSI instead. There is no single universal cut-off applied everywhere in India; clinics interpret the result alongside the couple's overall fertility assessment.
