A prolactinoma is a usually benign pituitary tumour that produces excess prolactin. Raised prolactin can suppress the hormones that drive ovulation, leading to irregular or absent periods, and sometimes breast discharge unrelated to breastfeeding. Diagnosis involves blood tests for prolactin and other hormones, and MRI imaging of the pituitary gland to confirm and characterise the tumour. Prolactinomas are usually managed by an endocrinologist, and many respond well to medical treatment, after which ovulation and fertility often return; treatment decisions and any medicine changes should be made with the treating specialist.
