Retained products of conception describes pregnancy tissue that remains in the uterus after a miscarriage, or occasionally after a delivery, instead of being completely passed or removed. It can cause ongoing bleeding, pain, or signs of infection, and is usually identified on ultrasound. Depending on the amount of tissue and your symptoms, management may involve continued monitoring, medication, or a minor procedure to remove the remaining tissue. Contact your clinic if bleeding continues or worsens after a miscarriage, or attend the nearest hospital emergency department if you develop fever, heavy bleeding or severe pain, as these can be signs of infection needing prompt attention.
