Products of conception is the clinical term for the pregnancy tissue that is passed naturally or removed during management of a miscarriage. This tissue can sometimes be sent for genetic testing to look for a chromosomal cause of the loss, which may help explain why a particular miscarriage happened, especially after recurrent pregnancy loss. Not every miscarriage requires or benefits from this testing, and your gynaecologist can advise whether it is likely to be useful in your situation. Results, when abnormal, most often show a one-off chromosomal difference rather than an inherited condition, though genetic counselling may be recommended if a result raises that possibility.
