Vanishing twin

The loss of one embryo or fetus in an early multiple pregnancy, while the other continues to develop.

Pregnancy loss

A vanishing twin describes the loss of one embryo or fetus in an early multiple pregnancy, often before it can be clearly seen on a later scan, while the remaining pregnancy continues to develop. It is more often noticed after IVF because early scans are done routinely and a multiple pregnancy may be identified before the loss occurs, whereas in natural conception it may pass unnoticed. This can be a difficult and confusing experience emotionally, even though the ongoing pregnancy is usually unaffected in most cases. Your clinical team can talk through what was seen on your scans and, if you would find it helpful, connect you with counselling support.

Also known as: vanishing twin syndrome
