Assisted reproductive technology (ART)

ART covers treatments in which eggs, sperm or embryos are handled in a laboratory — IVF, ICSI, frozen embryo transfer, egg and embryo freezing and donor treatment. Treatments where conception still happens inside the body, such as ovulation induction with timed intercourse or IUI, are usually grouped separately. In South Africa ART is provided by registered practitioners and laboratories, and SASREG sets professional standards for the sector.
