Intrauterine insemination (IUI)

In IUI, a semen sample is washed and concentrated in the laboratory and the best-moving sperm are placed into the uterus through a fine catheter, close to ovulation. It is used for mild male factor, unexplained infertility, ejaculation difficulties, and in donor sperm treatment for single women and same-sex couples. It needs at least one open fallopian tube, takes minutes and does not require anaesthetic, but the chance of pregnancy per cycle is lower than with IVF.
