Culture medium supplies the salts, energy sources and proteins embryos need, and is carefully matched to their stage of development. It is sensitive to temperature and to the gas mixture that maintains its pH, which is why the laboratory environment is so tightly controlled and why embryos are handled quickly outside the incubator.
