Embryo culture is the process of keeping embryos in nutrient media inside incubators that control temperature, humidity and gas concentrations, mimicking conditions in the body. Culture usually continues to day 5 or 6 so the laboratory can see which embryos develop furthest. Because stable conditions are essential, South African laboratories run backup power and continuous monitoring.
