Fertilisation failure means none, or very few, of the mature eggs fertilised. Causes include sperm factors, egg factors such as a failure to activate, or immature eggs. It is distressing and often unexpected. Clinics review the cycle afterwards and may change the approach — for example using ICSI in a subsequent cycle where conventional IVF was used.
