Eggs, sperm & embryos
A mature egg has completed the first stage of cell division and released a polar body, a state the laboratory describes as metaphase II or MII. Only mature eggs can be fertilised, whether by conventional IVF or ICSI, which is why the number of mature eggs matters more than the total number collected.
