An ovulation predictor kit detects the rise in luteinising hormone that precedes ovulation, giving one to two days' warning. A positive result means the surge has been detected, not that an egg has definitely been released. Kits can be misleading in PCOS, where LH may be persistently raised. They are sold in South African pharmacies without prescription.
