Testosterone is produced mainly in the testes and is essential for sperm production, along with FSH. In men, low testosterone with low LH and FSH may point to a pituitary or hypothalamic cause. Importantly, taking testosterone as a supplement, injection or gel suppresses the body's own sperm production and can cause a very low or zero sperm count. In women, raised testosterone and other androgens are often part of the PCOS picture.
