Egg collection

Egg collection, or oocyte pick-up, uses a needle guided by transvaginal ultrasound to drain each follicle, usually under sedation or light general anaesthetic in a day-surgery unit. It takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Cramping and light bleeding afterwards are normal; severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever or breathlessness are not and need urgent review.
