Insulin resistance

Reduced response to insulin, common in PCOS.

Conditions

In insulin resistance the body needs more insulin to control blood glucose. Higher insulin levels increase ovarian androgen production and can worsen irregular ovulation in PCOS. It is managed with nutrition, physical activity and sometimes metformin, and it raises the importance of gestational diabetes screening in pregnancy.

Also known as: insulin sensitivity, metabolic syndrome
