Iron deficiency

Low iron stores, common with heavy periods and in pregnancy.

Nutrition and lifestyle

Iron deficiency causes fatigue and, when severe enough to cause anaemia, complicates pregnancy. Heavy menstrual bleeding is a frequent cause, and requirements rise substantially in pregnancy. Ferritin is the usual blood test, and treatment is dietary change plus supplements, or an infusion where needed.

Also known as: low ferritin, anaemia, low iron
