Preconception

Preconception care covers the health steps taken before pregnancy: starting folic acid and iodine, checking rubella and varicella immunity, reviewing medicines and chronic conditions with a GP, updating cervical screening, and addressing smoking, alcohol and weight where relevant. Because the first weeks of pregnancy often pass before it is detected, these steps matter most before conception rather than after a positive test.
