Fertility basics
A live birth rate is only meaningful with its denominator. The same clinic can quote a rate per initiated cycle, per egg collection, per embryo transfer or per patient, and the numbers will differ substantially. Rates also depend heavily on patient age and on whether donor eggs were used. Australian clinics report to ANZARD, and age-specific national figures give a fairer basis for comparison than a headline percentage in an advertisement.
