Neural tube defect

A birth difference affecting the brain or spinal cord.

Pregnancy

Neural tube defects such as spina bifida occur very early in pregnancy, often before pregnancy is known. This is why folic acid is recommended before conception rather than after a positive test, and why food fortification is used in Australia.
