Progesterone is produced by the corpus luteum after ovulation and later by the placenta. It makes the endometrium receptive to an embryo and holds it in place. Blood progesterone about seven days after ovulation confirms ovulation, and progesterone pessaries or injections are given as luteal support in IVF cycles.
