After the egg is released the emptied follicle becomes the corpus luteum, producing progesterone to support the uterine lining. If pregnancy occurs, hCG keeps it working until the placenta takes over. In IVF cycles the corpus luteum may not function normally, which is why progesterone support is prescribed.
