Secondary infertility is difficulty conceiving after a previous pregnancy, whether that pregnancy resulted in a birth, a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy. New factors can appear over time — age-related change in egg numbers, a change in semen parameters, weight change, endometriosis, adenomyosis, tubal damage after infection, or scarring after a caesarean or uterine procedure. It is investigated in the same structured way as primary infertility, and it can be emotionally isolating because people assume conception will be as straightforward as it was before.
