hCG is produced by the early placenta and is what pregnancy tests detect. Because it acts like LH, an injection of hCG is used to mature eggs before retrieval or to time IUI. An hCG trigger stays in the bloodstream for days, so a home test taken too soon after it can be falsely positive.
